Normalization

intermediate

Definition

Restructuring data to reduce duplication and inconsistency. Instead of repeating the same information in multiple places, normalization splits data into related tables or structures and connects them with references.

In the wild

Instead of storing the company name 'Acme Corp' on every employee record, normalization stores it once in a companies table and links each employee to it with a company_id. Change the company name once and it updates everywhere.
