Client-Server Architecture

beginner

Definition

The basic shape of most apps and websites. The client is the program in front of you, your browser, your phone app, and the server is a powerful computer somewhere else that does the heavy lifting and stores the data. The client asks for things, the server answers.

In the wild

When you open Instagram, the app on your phone (the client) asks Instagram's computers (the servers) for your latest feed. The servers find the right posts, package them up, and send them back. Your phone just shows the result.
