Eventual Consistency

advanced

Definition

When data is stored in many places at once, an update doesn't reach all of them at the exact same moment. For a brief time, different copies might disagree. But if you wait a beat, they all catch up and end up matching.

In the wild

You change your profile photo on a social network. A friend on the other side of the world might still see your old photo for a few seconds, because the update hasn't reached their nearest server yet. A moment later, the new photo shows up for them too.
