Clone vs Fork

beginner

Definition

Cloning means copying a project to your own computer so you can work on it locally. Forking means making your own personal copy of someone else's project up on the internet, which you can then change freely and later offer your changes back to the original.

In the wild

You want to fix a typo in a popular open-source guide on the web. First you fork the project. That gives you your own online copy. Then you clone your fork to your laptop, fix the typo, and offer your version back to the original team for them to accept.
